Combining East & West

Swami Vivekananda, under the guidance of his Master Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, had dived deep into the ocean of Vedantic and other ancient lore of India. He gave, in1893, an introduction to such timeless Vedantic thought to the West (in the USA). Swamiji, an ardent student of Science that he was greatly impressed by the progress and prosperity which Science and Technology had ushered in the USA. Swamiji was as much impressed by our ancient thoughts as he was moved and haunted by the miserable poverty in his motherland. Thus, when he saw the economic prosperity in the USA, he could not but feel that India needed to supplement its own past greatness by the benefits of modern Science and Technology. He also saw clearly the limitations in the outer boundaries of Western Scientific thought. For instance, today, the Nobel Laureate Professor Josephs on and many others like him are looking beyond Quantum Physics to fathom Reality beyond matter. Consciousness as the ultimate Reality has begun to resound in all scientific conferences. But this concept of an all- pervading Consciousness was the basic tenet on which the whole edifice of Vedantic lore was built many centuries ago. It was for these reasons that Swamiji gave the clarion call to combine the Best of the East with the Best of the West. The Best of the East is, of course, the magnificent thoughts contained in the ancient scriptures (be they the Vedanta, Yoga, Medicine etc.), their emphasis on spiritualism in living lives; and the Best of the West was the wholly analytical scientific research based on empirical analysis, application of technology derived from such research to make material life more comfortable. Thus, even the most accepted, revered and sacred concepts and practices in Raja Yoga are put under the rigors of modern scientific analysis to prove their veracity. To follow humbly the path pointed by the Swamiji, VYASA has undertaken modern scientific research on the ancient yogic wisdom and, in particular, relating to Asanas, Pranayama, Meditation, Kriyas etc. While undertaking such analytical research here in VYASA, the contemporary, accepted international and national scientific guidelines and conventions are strictly followed (for instance, those of the Indian Medicine Council). This is ensured from the time of the selection of the sampled individuals to the rigorous investigation and statistical analysis of the data collected. The latest gadgets are used for medical (physical/mental) tests, while the research methodologies are done with the help of state-of-the-art computers and computer technology. The research papers, based on such sophisticated analysis, have been published in indexed international and national journals of repute. A list of some of such papers is given in this report.
